Integrate Bristol Education Resources

Integrate Bristol has created a series of education resources on FGM for primary and secondary schools in consultation with Bristol’s safeguarding board, the NSPCC, the police and local schools. The resources are available to download free of charge from their website and have been adopted by a number of schools around the country. They come with lesson plans.

Keeping Children Safe in Education – Statutory Guidance for Schools and Colleges

This statutory guidance from the Department for Education is issued under Section 175 of the Education Act 2002, the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014 and the Education (Non-Maintained Special Schools) (England) Regulations 2011. Schools and colleges must have regard to it when carrying out their duties to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Some interventions’ acceptability and success rested on the incorporation of FGM/C abandonment efforts within a larger set of related issues. Istanbul Convention – A Tool to End FGM

The Istanbul Convention has been signed by 39 countries and came into force on August 2014. This section on FGM outlines the responsibilities of European states to prevent the practice in Europe and protect survivors, and to ensure cross-border cooperation to bring perpetrators to justice.

FGM can be linked to forced marriage, as in certain communities where forced marriage is found, women are forced to undergo FGM before marriage. The multi-agency statutory guidance for dealing with forced marriage is for all persons and bodies who exercise public function in relation to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.

Re B and G (Care Proceedings: FGM)

This article analyses the President’s ruling in Re B and G (Care Proceedings: FGM) (No 2) [2015] EWFC 3, [2015] 1 FLR (forthcoming and reported at [2015] Fam Law 257) which addressed FGM in the context of care proceedings for the first time. The case underlines the importance of using expert witnesses to assess whether a child has been subjected to FGM. It also discusses male circumcision and parallels with FGM.
